![]() There’s a lot of people who felt like Diablo III got away from what made Diablo ‘ Diablo’ in terms of art style and spell effects. Design director Luis Barriga has a very strong vision for that game, a former employee said to Kotaku. For those people, whom I suspect (but obviously can't prove) are the majority clamoring for a darker Diablo, they won't care if the game is a blatant power fantasy so long as it's dripping with blood and viscera. Diablo IV is being designed with a new mantra in mind: Embrace the darkness. PoE is even faster than D3 when it comes to killing scores of monsters, yet many hold it up as the true successor to D2 atmosphere-wise even if much of it is, as you said, window dressing over a power fantasy of being obscenely powerful and killing entire pantheons of gods. Nevertheless I also suspect that most people don't care about that and want the power fantasy, just in an edgier format. I am also very skeptical that D4 will do this, though I am also not one of the people clamoring for a dark, edgy game and I won't be upset if D4 isn't like that so long as the game itself is good. That said, I definitely do think that for people who weren't happy with D3, just adding edgy graphics won't do anything if the core gameplay remains fast and involves killing hundreds of monsters per second. ![]() IMO a story and/or game can definitely be dark while still being a power fantasy at its core. ![]() Last updated at 14:00:17 UTC Weekly Help Desk RAGE Loot Thread Trade Thread ![]()
